10 Minutes of Tennis: Novak Djokovic hires Andy Murray

Episode #100 Season 24: Shaun Boyce & Justin Yeo

In this lively 10-minute chat, host Shaun grapples with one of the biggest stories in professional tennis. The the story is – Novak Djokovic has brought Andy Murray onto his coaching staff! This partnership has raised eyebrows and led to debate in the tennis community, and we’re here to explain it all.

So whether you’re a tennis lover, a Djokovic fan, or just someone interested in the dynamics around elite coaching, this is filled with insights and different viewpoints.

About the Guest

Special guest this week is Justin Yeo, world-leading tennis coach with decades of player development experience, including work with Tennis Australia. Justin knows the ins and outs of tennis coaching and uses his expert eye to take apart this unprecedented coaching decision. Justin’s insights into the game are a must-listen for any fans who want to learn more about the game from someone who’s been coaching it to players from youth level to pro level for years.

Key Highlights of the Episode

Jusin raised some interesting facts in this discussion that might make you more intrigued about Andy Murray’s sudden joining as a coach. Here are some insights you can check out-

1. Why Djokovic Chose Murray

Learn what led Novak to make the stunning move to hire a bitter foe and close friend. Shaun and Justin discuss how Murray’s deep knowledge of Novak’s style of play and mental approach may be that competitive edge Djokovic needs.

2. The Role of Familiarity and Trust in Coaching

Justin explains how communication, strategic breakthroughs, and a renewed sense of confidence (especially when players hit a plateau) becomes easier when you have a coach who knows you personally — who knows you like Murray knows Djokovic.

3. Murray’s Tactical Strengths

As a one-time world-class rival, Murray has played Djokovic many times at the biggest tournaments. Justin notes that Andy’s knowledge of Novak’s game has the potential — paired with his tactical intelligence — to open up new strategies for the Serb.

4. Resilience and Reaching out from others

Given Murray’s own struggles with injuries and a taxing career, he offers singular insights into physical and mental fortitude. This attitude could carry Djokovic through his older years on the tour with perspective and self-assurance.

5. The Fun Factor

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of this partnership is the joy factor. With Palace now on-board, Justin believes that as Djokovic enters the latter stages of his career, having someone within his coaching setup whom he trusts could free him up on the court, allowing him to enjoy the game he hasn’t quite so far.

6. Comparing It to Djokovic’s Past Coaches

How does Murray measure up to other big names in Djokovic’s coaching history, such as Boris Becker and Ivan Lendl? Shaun and Justin examine what’s different about Murray’s recent experience on the tour and his personal connection with Novak.

7. The Effect on Tennis Fans and the Sport

This collaboration isn’t just a new chapter for Djokovic — it’s a victory for tennis fans everywhere. Murray’s presence adds a new dimension to the tour and gives fans another reason to pay attention to Novak’s matches.

Justin’s Thoughts in a Nutshell

  • Andy Murray brings trust, familiarity, and a deep understanding of Novak’s game.
  • His fresh experience as a player adds relevance to modern coaching strategies.
  • Murray’s resilience from his own career struggles offers valuable insights for Novak.
  • Fun and camaraderie could be the secret ingredient to Djokovic’s late-career success.
  • This move is both innovative and exciting for the sport of tennis.

Today, this is 10 minutes of tennis with World-Renowned Tennis Coach Australian and Puerto Rico

Speaker:

Justin Yeo.

Speaker:

In this episode, you'll discover what Justin thinks about Novak Djokovic choosing Andy Murray

Speaker:

to be part of his coaching team.

Speaker:

Justin, where do you want to get started?

Speaker:

Well, there's a lot of comments going on right now about this.

Speaker:

I think we need to scrap some of the things that people want.

Speaker:

One of their things is to do two, they're laughing at it or three, they're thinking it's

Speaker:

short-lived.

Speaker:

And I can tell you, as a junior development coach out of tennis Australia, that the advantages

Speaker:

of a junior development coach is that they grow with the player and understand the player

Speaker:

and that when they hit to the pro-tour level, the advantages are that usually quite often

Speaker:

a coach that's on the tour will reach out to the junior development coach to ask them

Speaker:

about things that they could conquer or get over or if the player gets a little stuck or

Speaker:

a little bit, you know, staying where they are.

Speaker:

What I'm thinking of the word is just, yeah, it's a little bit, you know, the coach that's

Speaker:

known him for so many years can actually spruce them up or give them a couple of little tricks

Speaker:

and then ball them off they go again.

Speaker:

And I think we need to look at it that way.

Speaker:

Andy's known him since he was young.

Speaker:

He brings that to the party, he brings trust because he's been there at the top, he's tried

Speaker:

to beat Jockovitch himself so he's going to look at different tactics that Jockovitch

Speaker:

didn't know because he wouldn't share him with him which he has to now because he's probably

Speaker:

maybe getting paid.

Speaker:

But, you know, so there's all those advantages, there's advantages that Murray with his body

Speaker:

breaking down, he will understand what Novak feels at his age.

Speaker:

He's still just recently actively finished on the tour so he's got to learn a lot more of

Speaker:

what's going on out there and we've got to remember the top of the list was he was a very

Speaker:

good tactician.

Speaker:

I think also if we look at Andy's background, majority of the time was his mum as his coach.

Speaker:

So he, I think he brings a lot of consistency, loyalty, trust, strength, like emotional

Speaker:

strength to Jockovitch's game and I think it'll just spruce it up and last but not least

Speaker:

and I don't think anyone's really talking about it either but this is his last maybe few

Speaker:

years so why not bloody enjoy it?

Speaker:

Why not have some fun with a mate and have a bloody good time, you know?

Speaker:

So I don't see it as a joke, I think it's serious.

Speaker:

I mean, we could laugh that he brought back her in and back her barely could walk into

Speaker:

the box half the time, you know, no job on you, back her.

Speaker:

But back her wasn't in great shape but you know, we didn't laugh about him.

Speaker:

We didn't laugh about Ivan.

Speaker:

Ivan came in and worked for him as well.

Speaker:

So I think I think this is a great move.

Speaker:

I think it should be exciting and it's more exciting for the spectators and for everybody

Speaker:

because they're now going to see Andy still on the tour.

Speaker:

So I think it's great.

Speaker:

I hope it sticks around and anything is going to be great for tennis.

Speaker:

Mullen.

Speaker:

Yeah, and I think the bringing in someone who's that fresh off the tour reminds me of the

Speaker:

last really famous guy that did that and I think he hired him while he was still playing

Speaker:

on the tour was Andre Agassi.

Speaker:

He brought in a guy that was what, still top 10, Brad Gilbert was still playing tennis

Speaker:

when he was hired as a coach and I think that might add something that the other guys

Speaker:

can't possibly maybe even afford to do is say the two things you mentioned that I really

Speaker:

keyed in on.

Speaker:

One is he can hit with him basically.

Speaker:

I'm still capable of being number one in the world for at least a few points is thinking

Speaker:

Andy Murray.

Speaker:

So we can hit and have a great time and why not do that rather than bringing in the old

Speaker:

guy.

Speaker:

We used to think, okay, I'm going to bring in the guys who knew how to win a Grand Slam and

Speaker:

that's a great coach for getting through those first few will say.

Speaker:

But in this case, it's just fun.

Speaker:

Hey, Andy brings that.

Speaker:

I know how to win a Grand Slam.

Speaker:

I also know how to win a Grand Slam in this last 10 or 15 years, which is different.

Speaker:

Boris Becker doesn't.

Speaker:

I think Becker would have lasted longer if he could travel to certain countries.

Speaker:

I think he had some limitations.

Speaker:

But in this case, bringing in Andy, also it's about the fact that they can speak about

Speaker:

how others try to beat Novak.

Speaker:

If there's that special little bit, they say, oh, you know what, Justin's got keyed in on

Speaker:

that thing that beats Sean and Sean doesn't know what it is.

Speaker:

That's tactically the only thing that's left, right?

Speaker:

Yeah, well, that's all that's left.

Speaker:

I mean, he's not going to come in and work on his physical and work on his shoulder.

Speaker:

No, physically he may give some ideas because he's had to go through some a lot in the last

Speaker:

three years between retiring, coming back, hip replacements, all of that stuff.

Speaker:

There might be some tricks that he could add to extend Novak's time.

Speaker:

But at the end of the day, there's not much he's going to be able to do except for sitting

Speaker:

down with these mates that he grew up in junior years, have a bit of fun with it and say,

Speaker:

this is how we're going to break down center.

Speaker:

This is how we're going to break down Alcarez.

Speaker:

And then the rest of the crowd, let's just make sure we stay on top of what they're growing

Speaker:

with and we beat him that way as well because he's got the mental edge.

Speaker:

Yes, they all say he knows everything.

Speaker:

If you talk to Novak, he wouldn't say that.

Speaker:

He wouldn't say he knows everything.

Speaker:

So as far as I'm concerned, he's going to learn a lot because he's open-minded to the

Speaker:

learners.

Speaker:

And it wouldn't be easy either to just hire a mate.

Speaker:

But at the end of the day, I think they're going to have a great time.

Speaker:

And I can't think of a better way to finish your career than to go ahead, go and play

Speaker:

with the main viewers from the junior years who was, you know, they called him in the, he

Speaker:

was at one stage, the top four, the four that they all talked about.

Speaker:

Big four, he was part of it, yeah.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

So why not?

Speaker:

I mean, I think it's bloody brilliant.

Speaker:

I think it's, I think it'll be awesome and I'm looking forward to seeing how much fun

Speaker:

everybody gets to have with it.

Speaker:

Yeah, can I hire a coach that's actually beat me at Wimbledon?

Speaker:

Yeah, nobody gets that opportunity.

Speaker:

Right, right.

Speaker:

And, and enjoy it because they're close friends.

Speaker:

So I think he, I think maybe bringing back a bit of fun into it too.

Speaker:

Maybe we'll help Jockovich because he maybe he'll swing a little freer.

Speaker:

Maybe he'll say, you know what, I'm going for town.

Speaker:

And that's one of the big secrets that he does really well that not many people talk

Speaker:

about either.

Speaker:

And the amount of Fetter of matches where Fetter was on top of him, had him on toast and

Speaker:

he just started swinging away and then all of a sudden broke Fetter is back and then just

Speaker:

wouldn't stop swinging.

Speaker:

So it is a mental edge or something emotionally that he just clicks that.

Speaker:

What was the, uh, sorry to interrupt the, the two return of serves that he hit Fetter

Speaker:

had two match points in the US open.

Speaker:

When was that?

Speaker:

Yeah, I'm trying to remember what you that was.

Speaker:

He just nuke to four hand return just, you know, forget it.

Speaker:

I'm out of here.

Speaker:

I don't care if it goes in.

Speaker:

I'm going to have a lot.

Speaker:

He does it twice in a row and comes back to win that match against Roger.

Speaker:

He was unbelievable.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And he was, he was two sets, two sets to one down.

Speaker:

So, uh, and he had, yes, yet two match points.

Speaker:

He was 40, 15 up and he now two massive four hand returns that just the whole crowd, even

Speaker:

Fetter of like.

Speaker:

And then after that break, he just just, everything's changed from there on.

Speaker:

It's a great confidence.

Speaker:

And I think that's a bit of it about the coach as well.

Speaker:

And maybe this is, this is where we need to leave it.

Speaker:

You've mentioned a lot of great things, but to be able to say, I know I've given my everything.

Speaker:

It's that, that I can, I've left everything on the table and I have the best opportunity

Speaker:

in the coach's box.

Speaker:

I can look up at Andy.

Speaker:

He could say something to me or not, but I know I've given this everything.

Speaker:

It's supreme confidence.

Speaker:

It's not like, well, I can't afford a great coach.

Speaker:

So maybe I've got bad.

Speaker:

It's like, he's going to go in knowing he's got the best chance possible.

Speaker:

Yeah, I agree.

Speaker:

It's, it's, to me, it's double, double whammy.

Speaker:

He's getting, but he's getting double the energy and I think they'll have a good time doing

Speaker:

it.

Speaker:

I mean, that's all I can, all I can say is coming back to really thinking about it to like,

Speaker:

if, put ourselves in his shoes, he's done everything, you know, there's still the argument,

Speaker:

is it the goat, is he not the goat?

Speaker:

I mean, let that all go and just think of him as a player coming to the end of his career.

Speaker:

I couldn't think of a better choice to go out there and have a good time and have him in

Speaker:

your box, you know.

Speaker:

And if Andy can bring it to his box, Andy wouldn't take the job otherwise.

Speaker:

So there's the other side of it too.

Speaker:

Yeah, I agree.

Speaker:

Justin, thank you so much.
