In this episode, we dive into a key pickleball technique: dinking. Our special guest, Jim Carrella, also known as Jimbo Pickleball, is an RSPA and PPA-certified pickleball pro. Jim shares insightful tips on why dinking is a fundamental part of the game and how it can elevate your strategy on the court.
Key Highlights
- Why We Dink: Jim explains the three primary purposes of dinking:
- Opening the Court: Using angled dinks to create space and opportunities.
- Testing Opponents: Evaluating their ability to execute this challenging shot.
- Setting Up the Attack: Strategically causing a pop-up for offensive play.
- Dinking with Intent: Far from being a purely defensive move, dinking is a way to find offensive opportunities and gain the upper hand in the game.
- Pro Tip: Dinking isn’t just about being soft; it’s about strategy, control, and opening up winning chances.

Speaker:Hi, Jim Carella here, aka Jimbo Pickleball.
Speaker:Today we're talking about dinking and why we dink.
Speaker:First, I think there are three reasons.
Speaker:One is to open up the court with good angled dinks.
Speaker:You can expose more space.
Speaker:Second is checking on your opponent's skill to dink.
Speaker:It's a high level shot and they may not be able to execute it.
Speaker:Why not take advantage of that?
Speaker:And finally, the most rewarding of all is the pop-up.
Speaker:Dinking in a spot which creates a pop-up that you can attack.
Speaker:So dinking is not just to be soft.
Speaker:Dinking is to try to find offense in the game.
Speaker:Hope this helps.
