Season 25 Episode #30 Ben Hestley and Shaun J Boyce

Hello tennis folks! Today in this short episode we’ve invited Ben Hestley. Today he is not here to reveal any secret trick to enhance your playing style. Instead it's straight forward advice to help you understand where to stand when returning serve while playing doubles. What is it? Hit the play button to know!

About the Guest

Ben Hestley is the founder of Bull Shark Sports, a company dedicated to developing athletes' skills through tennis and other sports. With years of experience coaching and training athletes, Ben is a strong advocate for multi-sport athletes and the unique benefits tennis offers, especially when it comes to improving coordination, reaction time, and focus.

Ben Hestley's Tips

Ben's key tip in this episode: tennis is not just a sport in itself, but a tool that enhances performance in other ball sports. He compares tennis to playing catch, but with rackets, emphasizing how the ball tracking skills developed on the tennis court will improve your child's ability to track balls in other sports. Ben encourages parents to introduce their kids to tennis, whether they already play other sports or are just starting.

Be Our Next Guest

Like Ben Hestley, you can also come to our studio and share your actionable insights. Today's tennis tip comes from Ben Hestley of Bull Shark Sports.

Have a listen and let us know what you think.

Speaker:

Hi, this is Ben Hestley from Bull Shark Sports.

Speaker:

Today's tip is on a return of serve positioning.

Speaker:

I get asked this a lot.

Speaker:

Where do I stand when returning serve, especially in doubles?

Speaker:

Well, in doubles, you want to stand as close to the service line as you can and still be

Speaker:

able to effectively handle the serve.

Speaker:

This helps you to put pressure on the server while also being able to hit a shot that avoids

Speaker:

the net player because you're closer inside the court because what you really want to do

Speaker:

is play the ball as it's rising from the court.

Speaker:

If you're too far back and the ball has now started declining and dropping, then it's

Speaker:

more difficult to get the ball over the net to put pressure on your opponent and avoid

Speaker:

the net player.

Speaker:

I see a lot of players that stand too far, closer to the baseline and they get poached

Speaker:

on all day long.

Speaker:

So you don't want that to happen, obviously.

Speaker:

So when you're out there in the court, analyze your serving opponent, how effective is

Speaker:

their serve and how close the service line can I get because you want to play the ball

Speaker:

on the rise and put pressure on the opponent.

Speaker:

Hope that helps and keep holding return out there.

Speaker:

Well there you have it.
